If nothing else, I have to admit that fraternities provide a sense of tradition, in the same way a lot of religions or cults do. And that all the screaming was happening does say something.

In Houston Smith's The World's Religions he states,

A genius for absorbing peoples of varying national and ethnic backgrounds has earned for [the United States] the reputation of being a melting pot; but in weakening the traditions that immigrant groups brought with them, the United States has not provided them with a compelling replacement. This leaves the nation perhaps the most traditionless society history has known.

And he's right. And I've been lamenting that for years. But I'm fairly convinced that the traditions we need to find are not the ones we've chosen. And we could do worse than to adopt those things which merely please us, a festival here, a celebration there, to have something warm and comforting to hold onto like a stuffed toy we carry in childhood, and to let cultural resonance grow its own traditions over the years.

And that's all I'll say for now, because I've spent the last five hours not working.

It's bid day. I mean, okay, they're happy, and I fully believe in public revelry and feel we don't have nearly enough of it - but it's

A - the kind of public revelry that not everyone is permitted to join in on - not so much an issue for people like me, but think of those denied bids - I've seen some crying in years past;
B - held right freaking outside my dorm. C'mon, people! What if some of us wanted to study? Or sleep?

There are only so many shrill screams one can endure when there's not a mutual cause for excitement. Big parade? Live concert? Apocalyptic meteorite shower? Okay. But "Yay, we're all wanted as part of what for all intents and purposes is a cult," not so much. Can't they take it to a less residential end of campus, somewhere it can be avoided? We have plenty of space....
